Call to action

Dear LPC family,

In response to the passing of Proposition 8, prohibiting the right for same-sex couples to marry, the Gay Straight Alliance of Las Positas College would like to point out a few things that have been violated. This is to all the “No on 8″ supporters.

Not only does Prop 8 take away a fundamental right to a group of people, but it also degrades the constitution of California and the constitution of the United States of America. The 14th Amendment clearly states, “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property.”

The constitution also states in the First Amendment that, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . .” If the citizens of the great state of California passed Prop 8, what does that say about the citizens’ knowledge of the land in which they live?

The rights of the citizens of our country are all at stake here. “All men are created equal” is arguably the phrase in which this country was founded, and which it should be upheld.
A battle was lost in the passing of Prop 8. A battle that not only represented the separation of our people, but a battle that also unified a sign of hope.

The “No on 8″ campaign has brought a group of people together that was otherwise separated, and I Kyle Jones, president of the GSA, would like to thank those people for doing so. Without unification, we cannot win a battle. One idea cannot be upheld: the idea of “all men are created equal”.

So, I urge you come to mourn the loss suffered by same-sex couples whose marriages won’t be recognized by the state. But I also urge you to not give up hope. The GSA and UCC members are meeting at the United Christian Church in Livermore on Saturday, November 8 at 11 a.m. The address is 1886 College Ave., at the corner of ‘M’ St. We all will be wearing black and have a candle each person will hold.

The candle signifies our light within which is flickering in this dark time of our lives. This light drives us toward happiness and reminds us that together, the light can grow into a glowing sun that illuminates the statement in which this country was founded, “All men are created equal.”
